# How to use MarketPulse
## Learn how to use MarketPulse as the ultimate comp shopping tool!

### **MarketPulse**
MarketPulse saves you time by pulling hundreds of brands and retailers into one simple-to-use tool and allowing you to comp shop down to the product and keyword level. This is especially helpful for those who are interested in pricing or assortment analysis at various competitive retailers.
When you log in, your home page will be the Trend Discovery Dashboard view displaying top trends. To open MarketPulse, click on the shopping cart icon from the menu on the left-hand to get started.
Use the drop down to specify what you're looking for, by using as many filters as needed or none at all:
**Category**
You can select one or multiple categories to focus on. Depending on the initial category (Women, Men, Kids) you have selected, you can utilize the Size Range filter to get even more specific on your selection. This allows you to select from special sizes or gender categories like Plus Size, Maternity, Juniors, Baby, Big & Tall, depending on which category you're working in.
**Retail Site/Brand**
Select from retailers (websites selling one or multiple brands) or brands (a single brand that may be sold at one or multiple sites) to filter by direct/market segment competitors or to view current assortments from an aspirational brand. Use the Search Bar to type in the retailer or brand name you are looking for.
**Color**
Filter to specific shades or color families using the checkboxes and swatches. We use image recognition technology to sort products by color.
**Discount**
Use the Full Price filter to only view products at full price, if you don't want to look at anything on markdown. Use the Total Non-Full Price to see what competitors are marking down. Note: Markdown reflects stated price on the retailer site (but doesn't reflect promotional basket codes).
**Pricing**
Choose among price segments or select the whole range. This is a great way to discover competitors by price point if you don't know who to select in Retailer/Brand. You can also filter to Original Price here if you want to standardize pricing.
**Search Product Description**
You can search for any keyword or phrase pulling from free text, product copy, or product names and tags from the retailer site. Use **Or/And/Exclude** buttons to go one step further and search multiple terms together or exclude terms to filter out noise from your query. Note that with any MarketPulse query, if you use quotes around your searches, you will only return items that match exactly what you are searching.
**OR Function**
The OR function serves to give you all products with any of the terms that you are searching for. Think of this as your broader net.
To narrow down your search, using the examples of “puff sleeve” and “bell sleeve”, type each trend and select it or hit enter. This will return all products whose descriptions contain EITHER “puff sleeve” OR “bell sleeve”. This is great for trends that you know retailers call out in different ways.
**AND Function**
Similar to your standard spreadsheets, the AND function combines your search terms. For example, if you search “puff sleeve” and “bell sleeve”, you will ONLY return products whose descriptions contain BOTH “puff sleeve” AND “bell sleeve”.
To retrieve an AND search, once you have entered your terms in the search bar, click the green OR button to toggle it to a blue AND button.
**Exclude Function**
The “exclude” function does exactly what it sounds like: exclude certain items from coming up in your search. Continuing with the above example, if you search for “puff sleeve” and EXCLUDE “bell sleeve” from your MarketPulse query, you will ONLY return products that have “puff sleeve” and NO products that contain “bell sleeve”.
To exclude a trend, first start by typing the trend you would like to show results for as usual and hit enter. Then type in the trend you want to EXCLUDE, but instead of selecting the word or hitting enter, click the small red STOP SIGN next to the term.
### **Widgets**
Once you've set your filters, you can analyze data across each of the widgets below: Retail Sites, Brands, Categories, Price Segments, Discount Segments, and Attributes/Trends.
Expand each widget to see more data on product count, price, and discount data. Click on any column to sort the table. Download the widget data to Excel by clicking on the right-hand arrow within each widget.
- **Products** - the number of products based on your selected filters
- **% to total** - of these products (this helps let you know which retailer/brand or category is the leader)
- **Min/Avg/Max** - pricing that can help quickly comp shop (avg price can help assist gauge with any competitor price increases)
- **% Full Price** - the percentage of products (based on your filters) that are full price
- **Avg Disc %** - of the products that are discounted (based on your filters), the average percentage across those products
- **Stockout %** - the percentage of assortment that is sold out at the moment, acting as a gauge of sale of product
Use the drop down within the Attributes & Trends to narrow down assortment data by a grouping of attributes like detail, print/pattern, silhouette, etc.
To see a visual representation of each individual product, use Market Stream.
To sort the products in Market Stream, use the drop down by clicking "View Products By" to sort by date, Top Market Mover, or price. To download click the arrow on the widget (limit of 3,000 products).
**First Seen Date** - sorts by newest products
**Top Market Mover** - sorts products that are new-to-market and high stockout items, indicating products that are doing well for competitors
Hover over each product image to identify: the date it was added to the website (top left corner), the brand and retail site, the price, the stockout %, and the product description.
**NOTE:** Turn on the **Product Count by Style/Color** toggle to pull in products that have multiple skus/colors to see them all.
**Cross Section Report**
The Cross Section Report acts like a pivot table where you can manipulate your filter selections in a number of ways. If you are looking to compare a Brand across Retailers or a Retailer’s Brands across Categories - this report can help you with your analysis. Use the Axis drop downs to change how you want to view and sort your report across Retailers, Brands, and Categories. Use the last drop down to select the data you would like to analyze - product count, pricing, or discount. You can also download the table to excel.
**TL Tip:** Use the Search Product Description field to identify how Retailers and Brands are investing into and how they are pricing a trend (like Polka Dot or Barrel Pants).
