# How to Use MarketPulse to Comp Shop Your Competitors

## See how retailers and brands are positioning themselves around key trends.

Use the MarketPulse module to dive into the data around competitors assortments and begin your analysis. Here is a quick video to watch step by step [how to comp shop within minutes!](https://www.loom.com/share/08e7ae545b96462ea41a273c3a91f1df)

**Categories**

Use the filters at the top of the module to narrow your selection to specific categories and begin your analysis. Then, select the retailers or brands you want to compare in more detail.

Once you’ve made your selections, expand the **Categories** widget below to see how the retailers or brands you selected are positioned across categories. This view provides a category penetration breakdown across metrics such as product count, price point, Avg Discount %, and Stockout %.

**Pricing**

To understand pricing for one or more competitors, use the *Min*, *Avg*, and *Max* columns in the relevant Retail Sites, Brands, or Categories widget to compare assortment price points. The *Avg* price column is especially helpful for monitoring whether competitors are raising their prices over time.

**TL Tip**: Filter on *Full* *Price* under the **Discount** filter at the top to exclude markdowns.

You can also use the **Price** **Segments** widget to see where the assortment is most heavily concentrated across price points within your category selection. This is especially useful when evaluating opportunities to create a new product category.

To view pricing at the product level, scroll down to **Market** **Stream**, where you can see the price of each item and export the data to Excel for further analysis. You can also sort pricing here from *High to Low* or *Low to High*, depending on what you want to explore.

**Attributes & Trends**

Understanding which trends your competitors are investing in—or not yet capitalizing on—can add valuable insight to your analysis. Use the **Attributes** **&** **Trends** widget to see which attributes are most frequently called out in product descriptions, then use the dropdown to drill into more specific details such as color, print, fabrication, and more.

To identify specific trends quickly, use the **Search** **Product** **Description** bar at the top to pull in matching products. For example, if you want to understand how a competitor is investing in polka dot print and how it is being interpreted today, type in “Polka Dot” to see those products across the assortment.

If you work with multiple retailers or brands, you can comp shop across individual market segments to better understand your client. Use the **Retail** **Site** filter to sort by a market segment, such as *Mass* or *Luxury*, to see how those retailers are investing in a trend.

#### **How and When to Use this Tool**

1. **Understand How the Market May Call the Same Product Differently:** When analyzing how your competitors or the overall market is chasing into a trend, keep in mind that there might be different variations of that trend that you should also analyze. For example, when diving into the animal print trend, one retailer might refer to the print as Cheetah, while another retailer might refer to the same print as Leopard. By using the Search Bar and entering both “Cheetah” and “Leopard”, you are capturing the full picture of this trend, regardless of what competitors are calling it.
2. **Use Market Stream to gain creative inspiration:** Quickly scan current Brand or Retailers assortments to help you with your future assortment. Gain better understanding of colors, prints, stylings to help you update any best sellers or add more colorways to your line plans. Refer to our [Design Inspiration](https://www.loom.com/share/de165930656e4b5cab7ba5bbdf5b89cf) video for more information.
3. **Identify Gaps in your Competitors Assortment:** Using MarketPulse in tandem with TrendPulse can help you understand where in your competitor’s assortment you can capitalize on. Using TrendPulse, identify current trends you have within your assortment or can action on quickly! Then go to MarketPulse to see if your competitors' assortment includes those trends.
